How to Get Gunpowder in Minecraft

Gunpowder becomes one of Minecraft’s most important resources once you start making TNT, brewing splash potions, or flying with an Elytra. You cannot craft gunpowder in normal Survival mode, but you can collect it from certain mobs, find it in generated structures, buy it from a Wandering Trader, or produce it with a mob farm.

1. Kill Creepers Before They Explode

Creepers are the most practical source of gunpowder for a new Survival world. They spawn in dark areas in the Overworld, including unlit caves and the surface at night. A Creeper drops 0–2 gunpowder when killed, and each level of Looting can raise the maximum by one. A Looting III weapon therefore allows a maximum drop of 5.

The important detail is that the Creeper must die without completing its explosion. If it blows itself up, it leaves no gunpowder. The safest approach is to use a bow from a distance. If you prefer melee combat, sprint-hit the Creeper, step back while its fuse calms down, and repeat. A shield can protect you if the timing goes wrong, but it will not recover the lost mob drop after an explosion.

2. Defeat Ghasts in the Nether

Ghasts also drop 0–2 gunpowder, increasing to a maximum of 5 with Looting III. They spawn in open Nether areas and attack with explosive fireballs. A bow is usually the safest weapon because Ghasts often float over lava, where dropped items can be destroyed before you reach them.

You can hit an incoming fireball to send it back, but a reflected fireball kill is less controlled than using a bow. Try to lure the Ghast over solid ground before dealing the final hit. 3. Hunt Witches

Witches can drop gunpowder along with redstone dust, glowstone dust, sugar, sticks, spider eyes, and glass bottles. Gunpowder is not guaranteed because the game selects from several possible Witch drops. When it is selected, the total can reach 0–6 without Looting and up to 15 with Looting III.

This large theoretical maximum can sound better than a Creeper’s drop, but randomly encountered Witches are not the fastest source. They are tougher to fight, throw harmful potions, and can heal themselves. Witch farms are more attractive when you want a combination of gunpowder, redstone, glowstone, and potion ingredients rather than gunpowder alone.

4. Search Chests in Generated Structures

You can collect gunpowder without fighting any mobs by exploring generated structures. This is especially helpful in a new world or on Peaceful difficulty.

• Monster rooms: Dungeon chests can contain stacks of 1–8 gunpowder.

5. Trade With a Wandering Trader

A Wandering Trader can randomly offer 4 gunpowder for 1 emerald. The offer is not guaranteed, and the trader has limited stock, so this is not a good way to supply a major TNT project. It is still valuable when you need a few rockets or play on Peaceful difficulty.

Unlike villagers with professions, Wandering Traders do not level up or permanently restock the same offers. Check each trader when it appears. If gunpowder is missing, you must wait for a future trader with a different random selection.

Best Way to Get a Lot of Gunpowder

A dedicated Creeper farm is the best long-term option for players who use Firework Rockets regularly. A typical farm creates dark spawning platforms, prevents taller hostile mobs from spawning, moves or scares Creepers toward a drop, and carries the loot into hoppers and chests.

Many designs place trapdoors on the ceiling because Creepers are shorter than Zombies and Skeletons. Some farms use cats because Creepers run away from them, while others use water flushing or newer mob-luring mechanics. The kill chamber may use fall damage, campfires, magma blocks, or a player-controlled Looting kill.

Before building a farm

• Choose a tutorial made for your exact Java or Bedrock version.
• Check whether the design is intended for a single-player world, Realm, or server.
• Follow the recommended AFK height and simulation-distance settings.
• Light nearby caves and spawnable surfaces if the design requires spawn-proofing.
• Test one spawning layer before spending resources on a large multi-layer build.

Java and Bedrock handle mob spawning differently, and game updates can change farm behavior. A farm advertised for one edition may produce very little—or nothing—in the other. Avoid copying a random design without checking its edition and update date.

How to Get Gunpowder in Peaceful Mode

Hostile mobs do not spawn on Peaceful difficulty, so Creepers, Ghasts, and Witches are unavailable. Your two practical options are structure loot and Wandering Trader offers.

2. Save emeralds. Check every Wandering Trader for the random offer of 4 gunpowder for 1 emerald.
3. Use it carefully. Structure chests are finite, and the correct trade may take time to appear.

The Wandering Trader makes gunpowder renewable in Peaceful mode, but slowly.
